6. How to reduce chargeable weight
- Right-size the carton. Empty headspace is pure chargeable weight. Pack to the product, fill voids tightly; repack factory cartons that use marketing-sized outer boxes.
- Compress and nest. Vacuum bags for textiles and plush goods; nest hollow items (pots, chairs) where hygiene allows; disassemble furniture where reassembly is cheap.
- Stack square, not tall. Palletise to a rectangular footprint; pyramids and overhang get measured on extreme points and waste stackable space.
- Match the mode to density. Very light cargo is often cheaper per unit in LCL (per CBM) than air; very dense cargo suits air per kg or FCL payload. Compare landed, not mode-sticker, prices.
